For no particular reason, here’s a list of national sales tax rates of European countries.

November 24, 2006 at 10:10 a.m.:Yep, that's sales tax. There's also income tax, which (for me) usually runs about 40%. And all the other taxes you don't think about, like gas taxes, property taxes; fees, like television registration and mandatory health insurance; the "Solidarity Tax" levied to rebuild East Germany. The tax burden in Germany, all total, runs about 80%.
That "7-10%" for Germany is misleading. 7% only applies to groceries. Everything else is 16%.
